Hey Coach. I never played on a basketball team as a kid nor made a school team. I got cut in 7th and 8th. I didn’t tryout in 9th grade only because to train myself but I never did :(. I only made the team for JV in 10th grade bc there were no cuts that year; I didn’t get a lot of playing time. I am looking to tryout this year for varsity. I trained a little bit over the summer. Also there are 8 spots open for varsity , so how do I become one of those 8 players that make it. Any tips on shooting, ball handling, defense,… basically the whole fundamentals of basketball?
Start grinding on those fundamentals now and make sure you’re doing all the other little things right at tryouts. You’ll probably want to grab Tryout Formula because it will show you ways to quickly develop your fundamental skills and make sure you’re doing everything right to make a good impression at tryouts. That will be key if you want to make varsity and get significant playing time. Besides that, some extra advice is to start taking training and practicing more seriously. To achieve big things in basketball you need to put in the practice!
Hey, last year i didn’t make 1st cut and that’s when i was playing ball maybe 1-2 a week for like 10min for fun. Then in March i got my YMCA pass and started playing ball at the gym from Friday to Sunday, sometimes weekdays if i had no school. From Monday to Thursday i’d be playing outside and practicing my handles. My handles are probably the best thing i have, but my finishing and shooting is great. I’ve nearly mastered the kyrie ball spin off the backboard from all angles and switch hands. I can use my left and right and everything, but my problem is staying balanced when coming off of a stepback or any setup into a shot like a crossover or anything. My catch and shoot’s great and i land quite a bit of pullups but when i change direction to my shot it’s a bit iffy, it’s okay but i want it to be more consistent. My main goal when changing direction is not to drift when i shoot, and i never do that it’s just i feel like i’m about to fall when i’m really not. Thanks
Hey Bob, sounds like you’ve got a great chance of having a better tryout then last year. This feedback is definitely helpful and will help me round out the Tryout Formula. Thanks!
I am really goood off court and I play everyday outside. I have great shooting, but I’m terible at layups. I never get passed to. I need to make a Good impression to my team. Help?
Last year I tried out and I got cut and I got discouraged but everyone one saying I got much better but I’m never around a basketball or a court so I haven’t practiced in a long time. How can I ensure that I’ll be good again during try outs and what skills do you need to have to be a small forward
This video will give you a great idea of what to work on, and I’ll be hitting on this in future videos, emails, and the full Tryout Formula so stay tuned!
